Cummins VGT Error Code
4956
What It Means, Why It Happens & How To Fix It — Without Replacing Your Turbocharger
This Is a Software Issue — Not a Turbo Failure
Fault Code 4956 means the VGT actuator's firmware is out of calibration with the ECM application. In the vast majority of cases, this is resolved with a Cummins INSITE software update and VGT calibration — the turbocharger itself is usually fine. Only after software correction fails should you suspect a hardware fault.
Common Symptoms
These are the most frequently reported symptoms when Fault Code 4956 is active.
Check Engine Light (MIL) Active
The most immediate indicator — the malfunction indicator light is triggered as soon as the ECM detects the actuator is out of calibration sync.
Reduced Engine Power / Derate
The ECM may limit power output as a protective measure when VGT control is compromised, resulting in noticeable loss of performance.
Poor Boost / Sluggish Acceleration
If the VGT actuator cannot position the vanes correctly, turbo response and boost pressure will be lower than expected.
Code Returns After Clearing
Clearing the code without performing the software update and VGT calibration will result in the code returning immediately or on the next drive cycle.
Root Causes
Understanding why 4956 appears is key to a permanent fix.
Actuator Firmware Mismatch
The VGT actuator's internal firmware version does not match the ECM calibration family (CM2350 / CM2450). This is the most common cause — typically after an ECM reflash or actuator replacement.
Actuator Replacement Without Calibration
A new VGT actuator was installed but the required INSITE calibration routine was not performed afterward, leaving the actuator unsynchronized with the ECM.
ECM Reflash Without VGT Update
The ECM was updated to a new application version but the VGT actuator firmware was not updated to match, causing the calibration mismatch fault.
Wiring / Connector Fault
A damaged or corroded connector between the ECM and VGT actuator can cause intermittent communication errors that trigger 4956. Always inspect harness and pins before condemning the actuator.
Tools Required
You will need these tools to properly diagnose and resolve Fault Code 4956.
Cummins INSITE
Required for actuator firmware update, VGT calibration, and fault code management. Version must support your ECM family.
Inline 7 or Inline 6 Adapter
USB-to-CAN/J1939 diagnostic interface required to communicate between laptop and ECM via INSITE software.
Engine Serial Number (ESN)
Required to look up the correct actuator firmware, calibration family, and fault tree in INSITE FIS for your specific engine build.
Inspection Light & Pin Probe Set
For checking actuator connector condition, terminal integrity, and continuity of wiring harness before condemning components.
Step-by-Step Repair Procedure
Follow these steps in order. Do not skip to hardware replacement before completing software steps.
Connect INSITE & Check ESN / ECM Family
Connect Cummins INSITE via your Inline 7/6 adapter. Identify the Engine Serial Number (ESN) and determine the ECM calibration family (CM2350 / CM2450 / X variant). This determines which actuator firmware version is required.
INSITE → Engine → Fault Codes → Active/InactiveUpdate VGT Actuator Firmware via INSITE
Navigate to the VGT Actuator Update module in INSITE. The software will identify the correct firmware version for your ECM family and push the update to the actuator over the datalink. Ensure ignition is on, engine off during the entire update process.
INSITE → Service Tools → VGT Actuator UpdateRun VGT Actuator Calibration Routine
After the firmware update completes, run the VGT Actuator Calibration routine. This calibrates the actuator's position sensors to the specific turbocharger installed. This step is mandatory — missing it will cause the code to return.
INSITE → Service Tools → VGT Actuator CalibrationClear Codes & Perform Road Test
After calibration, clear all fault codes via INSITE. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Perform a road test under load — accelerate through the RPM range and confirm:
- No return of code 4956
- No companion codes (2636 etc.)
- Normal boost pressure and engine response
Inspect Wiring & Evaluate Actuator / Turbo
If 4956 persists after software update and calibration, inspect the actuator connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or loose pins. Verify the actuator part number matches both the turbocharger and ECM calibration family. Only at this stage should you consider hardware replacement.
Repair Progress Checklist
Click each step to mark it complete as you go.
When The Code Won't Clear
Persistent 4956 after software update and calibration usually points to one of these.
⚠ Persistent 4956 After Software + Calibration
- Wrong actuator for the turbo/application — double-check the part number matches both the turbocharger and the specific ECM calibration family.
- Ongoing connector / harness fault causing bad data link to the actuator — inspect and repair all wiring before condemning the turbocharger itself.
Related / Companion Codes
These codes may appear alongside or before 4956. Resolve software and wiring issues first.
Safety & Warranty Notes
ℹ Always Follow the Cummins Service Manual
Always follow the Cummins service manual for the specific ECM family (CM2350 / CM2450 / X variants). INSITE FIS (Fault Information System) provides the official fault trees and procedure numbers for your ESN (Engine Serial Number).
