Cummins VGT error code 4956, What does it mean? and how to fix it
What the code means
Fault Code 4956 = VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) actuator software out of calibration / software doesn’t match application. In plain terms, the turbo’s electronic actuator firmware doesn’t match what your ECM expects, or the actuator calibration hasn’t been performed after installation. Diezeltuner Shop+1
Typical symptoms
Check Engine / MIL on, reduced power, poor boost control
Code returns immediately after installing or swapping a VGT actuator
VGT calibration procedure fails or won’t complete in INSITE/Jaltest jaltest.com+1
Common causes
Software mismatch between the VGT actuator and the engine ECM calibration (very common after actuator replacement—especially used parts). Diezeltuner Shop+1
Actuator not calibrated to the turbo after installation. NHTSA
Connector/harness issues at the actuator (corrosion or water drip from A/C condenser onto the actuator plug is a known problem). NHTSA
Tools you’ll need
Cummins INSITE™ (or an equivalent capable tool such as Jaltest) to update actuator software and run the VGT calibration. Cummins Inc.+1
Basic electrical tools for connector inspection/repair.
Step-by-step fix (shop procedure)
Verify part/application
Confirm the actuator part number is correct for the turbo/engine. A wrong-application actuator will trigger 4956. If it’s used, assume it has the wrong firmware until proven otherwise. Diezeltuner ShopInspect the connector & harness
Unplug the actuator and check for green corrosion, moisture, spread pins, or damaged wiring. Cummins notes A/C condensate dripping on the actuator can corrode the interface—relocate the drain if needed and repair the connector before software work. NHTSAUpdate the VGT actuator software (reflash)
Open INSITE → Calibration Selection → ECM/PDD Code Search and load the latest VGT actuator software that matches your ECM calibration.
Even if it says you already have the latest, Cummins guidance is to re-download and apply the current revision, then clear codes. Do not replace the actuator for 4956 unless directed by diagnostics. NHTSA
Run the VGT calibration
With ignition on and engine off, perform the VGT actuator installation/calibration routine in INSITE (follow the service manual procedure). Let it sweep/learn end-stops fully, then key-off/key-on per prompts. NHTSAClear codes & road test
Use INSITE to clear active/inactive faults, verify boost control and commanded vane position under load. If 4956 returns immediately, repeat step 3 (ensure the exact matching application firmware) and re-inspect wiring. Diezeltuner Shop
When the code won’t clear
Persistent 4956 after software+calibration usually points to:
Wrong actuator for the turbo/application, or
Ongoing connector/harness faults causing bad data link to the actuator.
Address these before condemning the turbocharger
Related/companion issues you might see
Other VGT codes (e.g., 2636 “actuator driver abnormal update rate”) can appear alongside or before 4956, especially when an actuator is failing or out of sync. Resolve software/calibration and connector issues first. YMAWS
Safety & warranty notes
Always follow the Cummins service manual for the specific ECM family (CM2350/CM2450/X variants). INSITE FIS (Fault Information System) provides the official fault trees and procedure numbers for your ESN.
